The Department of Algebra was founded in 1996 as the successor of the Department of Mathematics of the Faculty of Transportation Engineering, led by Gábor Szász and later by E. Tamás Schmidt. Since 23 May 2023 the department has merged with the former Department of Geometry and continues as the Department of Algebra and Geometry; this site presents its Algebra Group.
Our research covers classical algebraic structures as well as the border areas of mathematics and computer science: group theory, semigroup theory, number theory, mathematical logic, algorithmic and computer algebra, coding and cryptography, and mathematical and computational linguistics.
Our teaching includes the mathematics courses of the Faculty of Transportation Engineering and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Informatics, and the algebra and computer science subjects of the Faculty of Natural Sciences.
Our staff publish regularly in leading international journals and maintain collaborations with partner institutions in Europe, the United States, Brazil and China.
